I have some more Clip Art in the Classroom inspiration for you today, although this project is also one you could make for your own kids at home too. I have seen various versions of Story Stones with my illustrations over the years and they always make me happy! I had a similar game when I was a child and it was one of my favourites, I used to love making up stories with whatever character or object I picked out of the bag next!

If you are not familiar with Story Stones, the basic premise is simple: kids pick a stone at random and use the picture on the stone to start or continue a story. It can be a group activity where everyone takes turns, or a solo game to help spark creativity and imagination. There are other variations too, for example you could make two versions of each picture and create a memory game, you could use the stones to create a sorting activity where kids sort them by theme (people, objects, animals etc) or by colour, or ask the children to recreate a book they have read by putting the stones in order of what happens in the story.
However you use them, they are simple to create (just adhere some printed illustrations onto small stones) and make lovely, tactile learning aids.
Here are some examples of Story Stones made with my illustrations, click through to go directly to the post by the original creators and read all about how they are them. Many thanks to everyone who chose my illustrations to make their story stones, or class mascots, birthday treats or other gifts for their class!
Rather than make big sets with lots of different images, you can also use the same technique and a single image to make class gifts (maybe featuring your class mascot!) or birthday treats like these examples:
If you have created your own Story Stones I would love to see! Please feel free to get in touch or tag me on Instagram to share your creations with me and the team. Happy creating and storytelling!
