Today I am continuing my Clip Art In The Classroom series by showcasing a lovely reading initiative – Reading Caterpillars! I first came across these lovely little guys on Instagram as they are not something that I was familiar with from my own children’s schools. The premise is that students add an extra bead to their pipe cleaner caterpillar (or bookworm!) after reading (maybe for completing a book, reading a chapter or for reading for a set amount of time etc depending on the student and reading level).

At the end of the term or school year when the caterpillars have lots of beads on and are nice and long, they can be turned into bag charms, keyrings, or bracelets to celebrate the reading achievements of the students!
These are really simple to make – just print off some bookworm characters, laminate and then attach a name tag and a pipe cleaner to create a tail to string the beads on. There are lots of fun examples below with ideas for displaying in your classroom!
Click through to direct to the post featuring the reading caterpillar, or for those who were kind enough to send me photos of their caterpillars, click to visit their instagram profile and see more classroom ideas!
Of course, you’re not limited to just using caterpillars, you could make a reading otter:
or even a reading octopus!
If you use a similar reading rewards system in your classroom. I would love to see! Please feel free to get in touch or tag me on Instagram so I can see your caterpillars! Or otters, or octopuses!
