Like many, I am really enjoying the “adult coloring” trend. I’ve enjoyed finding detailed coloring pages from around the internet. I particularly like the availability to print ones I like, over and over again, and my kids really enjoy being able to color the same page as Mommy — because I’m still the coolest person ever to my toddlers! They think my pens are the best thing they’ve ever been allowed to play with (gel pens from the local dollar store).
While the online ones have been great, I’ve really wanted to attempt making my own. I found Kate’s stamps to be PERFECT for this. Using the most recent “Joodle” pack, I’ve made several coloring pages. I really like the flowers and circle doodles and am looking forward to “coloring practice” with shading techniques and color composition. For now, I’ve just sat my kids down with crayons, pens, and markers, and we had a good time!
I made a couple with just a centered cluster…
Then another a little more spread out across the page…
And finally, one covering the whole page…
To do these, I used PSE 12. I started with a blank (white background) US Letter size canvas. I layered the stamps around the paper, just as if they were scrapbooking elements, layering and clustering, but bypassing any shadow work. I then flattened the image, and saved as a Photoshop PDF file.
For printing, I kept my print settings as “actual size” (do not “fit to page”), and didn’t mess with the margins at all. My printer prints almost all the way to the edges without issue, but you’d need to be aware of how your printer works. You may need to keep your design more centered if your printer can’t handle margins.
I intend to make several more variations of pages, and am looking forward to more Joodle packs from Kate! I will print many copies for our upcoming birthday “art party” for the kids. I also think a coloring book is a fantastic gift idea for my nieces and nephews, the day care kids’ parties, or even a few coloring adults I know… *wink*
